A tisket, a tasket, there are strawberries in your basket! Straight from Miller Farms in Locust Grove comes the first fruit of the season at the Orange Farmers’ Market. One taste of picked-while-ripe strawberries and eating store-bought will pale in comparison.
Once home, store the berries covered and unwashed in the refrigerator. Wash only when ready to consume: tip the berries gently into a colander, immerse the colander and berries in a sinkful of water, swish gently, then lift and drain. Dry berries on a kitchen or paper towel.
Ripe strawberries may be enjoyed plain, with a sprinkle of sugar, drizzled with chilled pineapple juice, tossed with balsamic vinegar or topped with crème fraiche or sour cream. Try baking them into a favorite muffin recipe with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg or add some color and flavor to a favorite homemade ice cream recipe.
However the strawberries are consumed, pick up some ripe local strawberries and add it to your basket before the season passes by!
The Orange Farmers’ Market is held in Taylor Park on Main Street Wednesdays 12-5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Farmers’ Market is sponsored by the Orange Downtown Alliance.
