"Three pronged Tree" gouache 6" x 6" by Greg Hennen
Nichols Gallery Annex in Barboursville announces its Small Works summer exhibition with an opening Sunday, Aug. 16 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition features 12 artists from the Mid-Atlantic and continues through Sept. 27.
While many artists use small works as studies for larger works, others work small because their subject is small. "Birds on Copper" by Cynthia Burke is almost life-size, and rather than placing them in their natural environment, Burke presents the images as formal portraits.
Priscilla Whitlock creates small studies for larger paintings which are not purely descriptive, but a balance between the abstract nature of landscape and the two-dimensional quality of the paint.
Artist Greg Hennen, who recently moved from New York to the Blue Ridge Mountains, uses the small format to study the diversity of the woods in Virginia.
"I am excited about these small pieces," Hennen said, "because I can work at a pace that matches my enthusiasm for exploring my new surroundings."
Other exhibiting artists include as artists Rob Browning, Pat Cook, and Philip Koch and Jim Condron of Maryland, who is exhibiting in the area for the first time.
Located near the intersection of Routes 20 and 33, Nichols galleries are open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by chance. For information call 832-3565, or visit www.frednichols.com.
