If it's December, you can bet there will be a ballet company putting on Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Ballet" somewhere nearby, even in the small town of Orange. With seven performances between Dec. 9 and 19, in both Orange and Charlottesville, the Orange School of Performing Arts will be bringing the music of Tchaikovsky and E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic story of the Stahlbaum family on Christmas Eve, the colorful world of toys and candy that young Clara is taken to by the Nutcracker Prince and Snow Queen, and the magical powers of the mysterious Drosselmeier.
Under the direction of choreographers Lori Brown, Jessica Greenlaw, Ricardo Porter and Heather Powell, dancers from ages 4 to almost 40 have been rehearsing for months to bring the joy of this holiday classic to Orange and Charlottesville.
The show opens Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at The Firehouse Theatre on Main Street in Orange, with a 2 p.m. show Saturday, Dec. 10 and then a special matinee show in Charlottesville at the Earl V. Dickinson Performing Arts Center at Piedmont Virginia Community College. The ballet runs the following weekend with three performances, all in Orange, and ends with a special fundraising show Monday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
More than 50 dancers, most of them members of the award-winning Dance Explosion Jazz Companies at OSPA, make up the talented "Nutcracker" cast, which features Kyla Lardie and Voltaire Wade-Green as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier, Ali Gregg as Snow Queen, Marissa Brizzolara as Dew Drop Fairy, Cordelia Hogan and Amelia Elias as Clara (alternating performances), Austin Hickman as the Nutcracker and Glenna Strauss as the Rat King.
Tickets for the six regular "Nutcracker" performances are $10 per person and can be reserved by calling OSPA at 672-9038. Tickets for the PVCC show in Charlottesville Dec. 11 should be available at the door.
Don't miss The Nutcracker - a show family members of all ages can enjoy!
