During January and February, The Baker Gallery at Woodberry Forest School is featuring a wide range of black and white and color prints by local photographer John Strader.
The exhibition not only provides a rich portrait of the central Virginia community, from parades and street festivals to football games and county fairs, but it also serves as an insightful study of the human experience in general, in which the viewer feels the powerful themes of life common to all people.
Strader, a resident of Barboursville, has been observing and recording the events and surroundings of this area for many years. His images consistently reveal his eye for detail, surprising viewpoints, engaging compositions, and understated yet poignant emotional content.
Through the 1980s, he worked as a professional photographer, covering stories for the Orange County Review and The Daily Progress, and served as a photographer's assistant for National Geographic. Starting in the 1990s, John worked for many years at American Press in Gordonsville, taking a hiatus from photography. In 2003, he rekindled his passion for taking pictures and began working as a freelance photographer.
Currently, John is back in journalism, covering area events for The Central Virginian, as well as accepting assignments from a variety of clients including Woodberry Forest School and Montpelier.
There will be a reception for the artist in the Baker Gallery at Woodberry Forest School on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A gallery talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
Woodberry Forest School is located four miles north of Orange off of Route 15.
