Members of the newly formed 4-H Eco-ventures Club hit the ground running last month. They met for the first time on Monday, Oct. 26 and completed their first community service project on Friday, Oct. 30 at Dogwood Village Senior Living of Orange.
Anne Somerville, Dogwood Village staff member, faced the task of planting more than 300 spring-blooming flower bulbs in front of the new senior apartments. Club leader Laura Carter joined forces with Somerville and presented the service opportunity to Eco-ventures members. By 10 a.m. on their day off from school (parent-teacher conferences), five youths were busy working in the soil. Tilghman and Alden Carter, Eric and Jacob Deloriea, and Devona Chamblee brought tools, shovels, and the bulb-planting "Hound Dog" apparatus and accomplished the job in record time.
"This would have taken me forever," Somerville said. "You guys are great!"
When asked why he was helping with the project, Jacob Deloriea said, "I would just be at home playing video games or watching TV, and this is helping people."
Members are looking forward to returning to Dogwood Village in the spring to see the fruits of their labor as more than 300 daffodils and other flowers bloom.
The 4-H Eco-ventures Club meets the fourth Monday of each month at 5 p.m. at the Orange Extension Office. The club is open to all youths ages 9-18. Please contact 672-1361 for information, or visit the 4-H online newsletter at http://ocva4-h.blogspot.com.
