A weekly Master Gardener volunteer training will start in January on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for 16-weeks at the Culpeper, Madison and Orange Extension Offices. What is the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program?
The VCE Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program trains participants to become Master Gardener Volunteers in practical gardening and landscaping techniques, both preserving and protecting the environment. The classes are taught by the horticulture extension agent, experts, and professionals in the different fields.
What is a certified VCE Master Gardener?
They are trained volunteers who help their community by teaching others environmental sound landscape gardening techniques. They complete 50 hours of classroom training and 50 internship hours. After the completion of the initial 100 hour required commitment, they volunteer a minimum of 20 hours and attend eight hours of in-service training to maintain their active Master Gardener Volunteer status annually.
What do Master Gardeners do?
Primarily, they are educators in the community. Projects include school-based programs, a horticulture help-line, plant clinics, maintaining demonstration gardens, and horticulture therapy and others.
