Although health reform has been signed into law, the changes are not immediate and many families continue to have difficulty affording health care and the health screenings that can identify problems early while they are easier and less expensive to treat. In our own community, many adults do not receive regular health screenings for hearing, eyesight, diabetes, blood pressure or breast cancer.
In order to help address this issue, the community has come together once again to offer free health screenings to children and adults at the Orange County Health Fair, which will be held Thursday, June 17 from 4-7 p.m. at the Orange County High School Field House.
Over 30 community health providers and agencies will be on hand to share health information and provide free health screenings to everyone who attends. Screenings will include hearing, vision, diabetes, blood pressure, height, weight, body mass index and peripheral vascular screening. Those who attend and participate in the screenings will be eligible for door prizes.
For women, special screenings for breast cancer called mammograms are recommended yearly for women age 40 years and over. This is an important screening test, as approximately 12 percent of women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. The University of Virginia Mammography Coach, a mobile mammogram unit, will provide mammograms at the Orange County High School Field House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day of the health fair. Special funding is available for women without health insurance to make this important screening test available to everyone. Pre-registration for mammograms is required by June 5. Registration forms are available at the Orange Medical Center or registration can be done by calling 1-866-596-9367.
In addition to the health screenings, children and families can learn about health and about community resources available to help everyone stay healthy, including information on disaster preparedness, special health care needs, literacy and dental health. Other activities will include a fun walk around the track, free family photographs and a moon bounce for the children. Everyone is invited to celebrate families and health at the Orange County Health Fair, Thursday, June 17 from 4-7 p.m.
