The fourth in a series of five lectures on the history of Orange County will be given this coming Saturday, March 6, in DuPont Hall at Grymes Memorial School, starting at 10 a.m.
The title of this presentation is "The Civil War: Too Close for Comfort" and examines the experiences of Orange County and its residents during the American Civil War.
The presentation will deal with three main subjects: (1) Why there was so much Civil War activity in this immediate area (Ex: a cavalry battle in Main Street, Orange, on August 2, 1862); (2) Why there continues to be so much local interest in Civil War history; and (3) A look at some of the interesting people and fascinating details of that era.
The final lecture in the Orange County Historical Society series-"The Commerce of a County"-will be held March 13.
Each session begins at 10 a.m. in duPont Hall on the grounds of Grymes Memorial School, 13775 Spicers Mill Road, Orange, and will end by or before 11:15 a.m.
All sessions are free and light refreshments will be available.
The sessions are structured to be cumulative, but missing a session is certainly not fatal. Possessing and pre-reading a copy of Frank Walker's “Remembering: A History of Orange County, Virginia, “is not required but will be found helpful. Many facts and conclusions underlying its chapters will be presented.
Questions and discussion will be encouraged. Informational handouts will be available.
For additional information, call the historical society 672-5366 (afternoons).
