To the editor,
Mr. Jones in a letter to the editor printed May 7 urges Mark Johnson to run for re-election for District 1 supervisor. Other than the fact that Mr. Jones seems to be among the last to know that Johnson intends to run again, he also cites virtues that others fail to observe.
Despite Johnson's December 2007 announcement that he would not run for re-election, many are not surprised that he has decided to run. Many considered that announcement to be merely a ploy to relieve political pressure from fellow citizens. Why pressure a politician who has already announced that you will not get another chance to indicate approval or not at the ballot box. So much for the virtues of courage, honesty, forthrightness and integrity noted in Mr. Jones' letter.
Regarding Mr. Jones statement of Johnson's dedication to what is best for Orange County, consider a few of his gems: supporting a major development adjacent to Gordonsville that would adversely alter the character of this historic community and was opposed by most of the Gordonsville area; in general, supporting development and population growth that will cost all citizens in taxes and loss of quality of life; a lack of support for the long term vision of the county comprehensive plan to maintain the rural nature of the county; saddling the county with excessive and avoidable debt.
Elections are the time to consider the future and to review records. Hopefully, the citizens will look closely at the Johnson record and determine if this is the sort of future they desire.
Johnson can run regardless of his announcement that he would not. That is good. Good, not because someone with his record should be re-elected, but good because he should be held accountable for his record.
