Orange County voters overwhelmingly endorsed Mark Amos for a second term as sheriff.
Amos, who won the seat four years ago with 61 percent of the vote, increased the margin, collecting 74 percent of the vote against two-time challenger Donald Brooks. Brooks gained just 26 percent of the vote among nearly 8,000 cast.
"I think I've done a good job," the sheriff said Tuesday night after the results were tabulated. "The things we campaigned on are what got us elected."
Amos pointed to a decrease in overall crime and a reduction in accidents on county highways-particularly Rt. 20-as keys to his victory.
"We've done things the citizens like," the sheriff said. "Four years ago I said we'd cut down on crashes on the highways and we've done that. I said we'd cut down on crime and we've done that."
Brooks was gracious in defeat Tuesday night, despite his disappointment in the outcome.
"I congratulate Mark for his victory tonight," Brooks said. "Obviously, these are not the numbers I wanted to see, but I wish him and the sheriff's office all the best."
Amos swept each of the county's 10 voting precincts. The closest Brooks came was in District 2, where he collected 31 percent of the vote.
Amos took District 1 with 1,173 votes to Brooks' 431. In District 2 Amos collected 1,092 votes to Brooks' 500. In District 3, Amos garnered 1,020 votes to Brooks' 381. In District 4, Amos received 933 votes while Brooks collected 338. In District 5, Amos received 1,715 votes to Brooks' 411. Among absentee ballots cast, Amos collected 275 more votes with Brooks getting 92. The final margin was Amos 6,209 and Brooks 2,153.
