Perhaps the most contentious local election wasn't exclusive to Orange County.
Republican challenger Bryce Reeves battled longtime 17th District incumbent Edd Houck to win a seat in the Virginia State Senate.
In a high-profile, highly partisan battle, the two candidates spent more than $2 million battling for the 17th District, which includes all of Orange County, all of Fredericksburg and parts of Albemarle, Louisa, Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties.
Reeves collected 22,536 votes district wide to edge Houck (22,450) by just 86 votes.
Reeves won Orange County by collecting 4,540 votes to Houck's 4,008. Reeves also came out ahead in Culpeper County (1,842-1,800), Louisa (3,148-3,096) and Spotsylvania (8,999-7,363), while Houck took Albemarle (3,530-2,430) and Fredericksburg (2,653-1,577).
Overall, Reeves earned 50.01 percent of the vote with Houck claiming 49.82. Seventy write-in votes were cast.
Houck, 61, was first elected to the senate in 1984. He was seeking his eighth term in Richmond.
Reeves, 43, served as a captain in the U.S. Army Rangers and later as a detective in the Prince William County Police vice/narcotics bureau. He is currently the president of Bryce Reeves Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. and Reeves Asset Management Group. He lives in Spotsylvania with his wife, Anne, and their two children.
