Former Orange County High School soccer coach Steven M. Bowers, Jr. pleaded not guilty to 10 charges in court Friday afternoon.
Bowers, 32, appeared in court Friday for arraignment, which was granted a continuance last month.
Bowers was arrested March 30 and charged with two counts of forcible rape. According to Orange County Commonwealth’s Attorney Diana Wheeler, the two victims are minors, but are not Orange County residents or students, though the offense allegedly occurred in Orange. Bowers, a one-time teacher, was relieved of his duties at Orange County High School as the girl’s soccer coach following his arrest.
In August, a grand jury indicted Bowers on the first two counts of forcible rape, plus an additional five counts of indecent liberties with a child under 18 while maintaining a supervisory relationship, one count of indecent liberties with a child under 15 and two counts of object sexual penetration. He was released on a $25,000 bond.
On Friday, Bowers pleaded not guilty to the 10 charges he’s facing, eight involving one alleged victim and two involving another. According to indictments read in court the incidents occurred intermittently, with the earliest in June 2007 and the most recent September 2009. Wheeler alluded that one of the charges may be nol processed in the future.
Following his indictment, Bowers requested a jury trial which was set for three days, beginning July 18 at 9:30 a.m.
