The Montpelier Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are applying for a special use permit from the Orange County Board of Supervisors to build a cell tower at Montpelier. The proposed cell tower will allow Montpelier visitors, staff, and emergency personnel to access cell phones on the 4-square-mile estate, as well as enhance wireless service for Orange County residents along Route 20 from the Town of Orange to Somerset.
Montpelier has worked closely with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Community Wireless Structures and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources over the past year to ensure the proposed tower will have no adverse effect on the Madison-Barbour Rural Historic District and the historic landscape of Montpelier.
The proposed single pole tower design will be disguised to look like a pine tree and will be carefully sited on a wooded tract to blend in with the surrounding trees. These measures will make the tower all but unnoticeable from the surrounding area and from the grounds of Montpelier. Community Wireless Structures, LLC will develop and operate the tower.
The Orange County Planning Commission will review the special use permit at their next meeting Thursday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Gordon Building.
