GPC YARD SALE

MISSION GRATITUDE
Mission Gratitude will be partnering with the annual AIRFEST in Culpeper Sat., Oct. 11, at the air park 10 a.m.- 4p.m. The airpark is located at 12517 Beverly Ford Road, Brandy Station. CAR SHOW

CHILI COOK-OFF

COMMUNITY CONCERT
The Richmond Symphony Orchestra appears on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in the Culpeper County High School Auditorium.  This is a full, “Masterworks” concert under the baton of maestro Daniel Meyer. If you are not a season ticket holder and want to come, we will try to squeeze you in. For the first time in memory Stage Alive, Community Concerts is sold out! This means that we are unable to sell additional season tickets.  Because there are usually “no-shows” for every concert, single admission tickets for future concerts will be sold on a “space available” basis ten minutes before curtain time.

RVFD OPEN HOUSE

ORANGE AARP
The Orange Chapter 5373 of AARP will meet, Monday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Orange rescue squad building, for the regular monthly meeting. Duff Green will present the program on the history of the Silk Mill. Members are asked to donate supplies to the animal shelter as the community service project for September. NO TRANSPORTATION
The Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board and Area Agency on Aging transportation services will not operate on Monday, Oct. 13 in observance of Columbus Day.

ORANGE BRANCH NAACP
The executive committee of the Orange Branch NAACP will meet Monday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Sedwick Building community room.

ORGAN RECITAL
There will be an organ recital at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The guest artist for this event is Mr. Wallace Hornady, master of music at Woodberry Forest School. Mr. Hornady is a graduate of Bellhaven College and holds the master of music degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. Before coming to Woodberry, he served as assistant director of the American Boychoir. His program will feature works by J.S. Bach, Cesar Frank and Daniel Locklair, among others. Also included will be familiar congregational hymns.

RRCSB-AAA TO MEET
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board and Area Agency on Aging (RRCSB-AAA) will hold its regularly scheduled board meeting Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at its office at 15361 Bradford Road, Culpeper. CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE
Christmas assistance applications will be available beginning Oct. 14 at Orange County Social Services, 146 North Madison Road, Suite 201. Applications can also be mailed of requested by calling 672-1155. Anyone interested in adopting a family for Christmas should contact Kathleen Church at 672-1155. We have many families who need special help.

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE
A hunter education course will be held Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The 15-hour course includes classroom instruction, field demonstration and exercises and muzzle loader live fire instruction. The class is offered as a public service by Cedar Mountain Youths, Inc. in cooperation with the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. BLOOD DRIVE
The Barboursville Ruritan Club will hold a blood drive Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clubhouse located next to Four County Players, just off Rt. 33 on Rt. 678. Do not skip meals and drink plenty of fluids.

YOUNG AT HEART
Fall Programs for Young at Heart Club: Oct. 15, Quiz Day, Oct. 22, Elaine Anderson from TRIAD will speak on investment fraud. The Young at Heart Club meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Orange Ruritan Building at the intersection of Routes 20 and 522. The club, which takes local trips and performs community service, is open to anyone. CULPEPER ALZHEIMER’S GROUP
The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 10 to 12-noon at Amerisist Assisted Living Facility, 215 Southridge Parkway, Culpeper (540-825-4500) and every third Thursday of the month. The purpose is to assist families, caregivers and friends of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Facilitator is Lynnette Scott; (825-3100 ext. 3464) for more information. TRIAD CONFERENCE
Seniors and caregivers, get ready. It’s time for the annual Battlefield Piedmont Regional TRIAD Conference and get-together. As usual there will be informative and interesting speakers, topical exhibitors, great giveaways, complimentary lunch, terrific door prizes and good fellowship. This will take place Oct. 17 at Madison County Volunteer Fire Department, 1223 North Main Street, Madison, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with lunch. Come and hear speakers pass on information on current, brand new scams and other important issues that will help keep seniors free from crime and promote their general safety.

BLUEGRASS/GOSPEL MUSIC
Friday, Oct. 17 from 7-10 p.m. the public is invited to enjoy an evening of bluegrass and gospel music at the clubhouse next to Waugh’s off Rt. 20, Orange. GOLF TOURNAMENT
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be hosting the Bob Arnold Memorial Golf Tournament Oct. 18, 2008 at Shenandoah Crossing.  The captain’s choice tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.  The cost is $55 per person and includes green fees, cart, lunch and prizes.  All proceeds from the tournament go to the March of Dimes, ALS Association and Lutheran Family Services.  For further information, or to sign-up, call 967-3170.

TRACTOR PULL
The Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company is gearing up for the next tractor pull Oct. 18. The fire company is inviting participants in this upcoming fundraiser by creating a flea market as well, and will be selling 12 x 12 vendor spots for $30 for all-day. BOY SCOUT FOOD DRIVE
On Oct. 18, Boy Scout Troop 14 and Cub Scout Pack 14 of Orange will be holding the annual Scouting for Food drive. All food received will be given to the local area food bank. The scouts will place bags on various doors around the Town of Orange and community members can place food in the bags and leave them out for the scouts to pick up. The scouts will pick the bags up Oct. 25 from 9-11a.m. If you are not in the town area and would still like to give food, a representative will be in the Orange Elementary School parking lot from 9-11 a.m. on Oct. 25.

LOW ART EXHIBIT, SALE
The LOW Visual Arts Council (LOWVAC) will hold its annual exhibit and sale of fine art, crafts and photography at the LOW Clubhouse/Lower Level on Saturday, Oct 18 from 12 noon - 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. 

RIKKI’S REFUGE OPEN HOUSE
Wear a Halloween costume and trick-or-treat with the animals Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Rikki’s Refuge Animal Sanctuary, 10910 Barr Ln., Rapidan! Cost for admission is two (or more) cans of dog or cat food per person. Refuge tours leave the gift shop every half hour from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Pet, feed and love the critters ranging from happy pot bellied pigs to sassy pygmy goats. Refreshments, Halloween treats, raffle and face painting for all. Regional artist Carrol Morgan will sketch or paint charcoal or watercolor portraits for donations. RVFD/SHELTERING ARMS BENEFIT BINGO
The Rapidan Volunteer Fire Department will host a Vera Bradley Bingo to benefit Sheltering Arms, the homeless shelter in Orange on Sun., Oct. 19.  Doors at the firehouse bingo hall will be open at 1 p.m. with the first game starting at 2 p.m.  Food will be available for purchase.  Door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and more.  Please join us for an afternoon of fun, and help support the homeless. McGINNIS BENEFIT

DIABETES HEALTH FAIR
There will be a free diabetes health fair at the Madison County Fire Hall Tue., Oct. 21 from 5-7p.m. Many exhibitors will be on hand to share information on diabetes management, cholesterol management, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, foot care and blood pressure management. Jill York will then speak about diabetes care and management. While the event is free it is requested that you bring a canned food item to be donated to the local food bank. GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Brooke Wallace Captain’s Choice benefit golf tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at Meadows Farms Golf Course in Locust Grove. Proceeds from this tournament will go toward the Brooke Wallace Trust Fund. Brooke is five months old and was born with biliary atresia. This trust fund was established to offset some of the medical expenses associated with this rare liver disease. She is in need of a liver transplant and is in the process of an evaluation to be placed on a donor list. GHOST WALK
The Civil War Museum at the Exchange Hotel, 400 South Main, Gordonsville, VA (540)832-2944 will host its 8th Annual Ghost Walk on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. Guides will lead you through the dark and sometimes macabre floors of the museum as you witness scary scenarios from the War Between the States. FAIR MASQUERADE BALL
The Orange County Fair will have a Masquerade Ball Oct. 25 at Gordonsville Fire Hall, with music by Silver Creek, a silent auction, cash-bar, prizes and fun. HAUNTED FEARSTIVAL

TRUNK OR TREAT
Come join us as we gather for our third annual Trunk or Treat. GOLF TOURAMENT
Orange and Madison County 4-H invite you to support the Denny Wayland Memorial Fund and local 4-H programs by participating in the third annual Denny Wayland Memorial Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament, Mon., Nov. 3 at Greene Hills Club golf course near Stanardsville. Shotgun start at noon; please arrive no later than 11:15 a.m. Cost is $320 per team or $80 per player; registration fee includes 18 holes of play and cart, lunch, fried chicken, practice balls, more than $600 in prizes, soda wagon, hole-in-one special prizes.
