Montpelier camps blend history, fun

Have you ever wondered what life was like before television and text messaging? If so, hurry and reserve a spot for your child at one of Montpelier’s summer camps.
Gilmore Farm Camp
This summer, July 6-10, Montpelier is offering the Gilmore Farm Camp, a new five-day camp experience for rising seventh and eighth graders. Gilmore Farm Camp will allow students to see what life was like for a newly emancipated family in post-Civil War Orange County. Activities will include 19th century cooking, crafts, and games. Campers will also get to cook their lunch over the campfire each day.
Summer Fun Programs: Wednesdays in July.
On five half-day programs, Wednesdays, July 1, 15, and 29, children ages seven - 12 can participate in hands-on activities at the Hands-On Tent, Dolley’s Kitchen, and an archaeological site; follow clues to uncover America’s national treasures; or hike one of Montpelier’s creeks.
On July 8 and 22, children ages four to six can learn about the aquatic creatures at Montpelier in a fin-tastic adventure or explore the life and world of our feathered bird friends.
All three day camps will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Summer Fun Programs will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All camp sessions and Summer Fun Programs have limited space. To reserve a space, call 672-2728, ext. 401, or e-mail .
James Madison’s Montpelier
Montpelier is the lifelong home of James Madison, Father of the Constitution, architect of the Bill of Rights, and president of the United States. Visitors can currently see the progress of “A Presidential Detective Story: Rediscovering the Furnishings of James and Dolley Madison” through daily guided tours, now that the home’s recent $25 million architectural restoration is complete. They can also participate in hands-on crafts, cooking, and archaeology; leisurely stroll the garden and forests; take in the galleries, and many other attractions on the property’s 2,650 acres.
