Grymes Memorial students, faculty, parents, and alumni gathered together on Friday, May 29 for the 20th annual field day. Spotsylvania resident, Mr. Lee Kane, retired Grymes coach and physical education teacher, first introduced the military style formation as a prelude to the events. Kane, retired from the United States Marine Corps, taught at Grymes for 10 years and instilled daily wisdom in the students. At Grymes we are grateful to him for the tradition that he began to honor the young men and women who have died in service to the country. To begin the festivities, students lined up by class and did military style jumping jacks. Following this, eighth grade student Caitlin Horton called the classes to “attention,“ and a “right face” command was given to salute the flag. The games began with the school dividing into the traditional teams of Rebels and Virginians. Events included kickball, long jump, sack race, 800 meter run, relays, and more. At the end of each event, classes reported to the scorer’s table the points accumulated for each team. The score was tallied to reveal the Rebels score of 434 points over the Virginians with 431 points.
