Walmart is win-win

To the editor,
Like many of my neighbors in eastern Culpeper County, I shop a great deal at Walmart in the Town of Culpeper. However, if Walmart is built near the Route 3/Route 20 intersection, we will shift our shopping there. In my case, a round trip there is 12 miles less than the Culpeper store. With gasoline prices rapidly rising and the economy in the tank, this makes more sense each day.
Walmart opponents say this store is planned for the wrong place, at the wrong time but only propose more costly bureaucratic studies and other lengthy delays.
However, the Route 3 corridor has been designated for years by Orange County officials as a retail crown jewel that will create jobs and tax revenue for local citizens. It will be the proverbial rising tide that lifts all boats. For example, currently Walmart saves shoppers $1.21 for a gallon of milk (nearly 40 percent savings) compared to the closest large grocery store in this area.
Shoppers from eastern Culpeper County and western Spotsylvania County will help improve Orange County’s public finances.
Building Walmart now is a win-win for all of us.

plowman: 12 miles, fighting traffic, getting home to take care of your family, and saving 40% on groceries is a big deal to us, maybe not you, but it is to us.
