Walmart jobs look good in tough economy

To the editor,
A letter in the June 18 edition of the Orange County Review, “Better jobs out there than Walmart” got me thinking. Mr. Bangs writes of the job opportunities within a 40-mile radius of the intersection of Routes 522 and 20 and I have to say I sure would like to know where they are.
Understanding it’s not necessary to be a doctor or nurse to work in healthcare, because yes, there are various jobs in this industry depending on your skills and abilities.
But to even start at entry level in medical billing it is required to have at least a minimum of two years experience to even get your foot in the door. Completing a course at Germanna in May 2008 has not even allowed me a chance to pursue a career in this field.
He is also correct when stating there are job opportunities with the University of Virginia that do not require a PhD. But again, at this time most of those jobs are for current employees only and largest employers are under a hiring freeze due to the economy.
Regarding the Dominion nuclear power plant at Lake Anna, again, there are numerous job opportunities but the key words here are “if you are selected.“ From my experience the odds are against you when 300-400 people are applying for the same position.
Rest assured that the citizens of Orange and I are willing to travel the distance when the opportunity arises.
Finding a job these days has become my full-time job all in itself. And believe me, the proposed Walmart would give me a chance to sell myself and give them a reason to hire me, starting from the bottom on my way to long successful career with Walmart right here in Orange County.
