Hornet wrestlers pickup experience and wins at Powhatan Duals

The Orange County High School wrestling team won three matches Saturday and lost two at the Powhatan Duals.
The Hornets opened with a 72-11 thumping of Lancaster, but lost 45-30 to Jefferson. Orange lost a terribly close match to York 35-33 before rebounding to beat Manchester 43-23 and close out the day with a win over Powhatan 44-33.
In the opening match, Zach Ryder (135) pinned Hudson in the first period, and Ryan Almond (140) did the same to Friday. Colin Pierce (145) pinned Nguyen in the second period, while Dominique Walker (189) and Paul Bernd (285) each pinned their opponents early.
Phillip Coleman (103), Kain Sigler (112), Jackson Coleman (130), Sean Raftery (152), Herson Rodriguez-Ramos (160), Connor Nave (171) and Deon White (215) each won by forfeit, accounting for the Hornets’ large margin of victory.
Things weren’t so easy against Jefferson, but Sigler and Nave each won their match with pins, while Phillip Coleman, Ryder and Almond won by forfeit.
In the York match, Hugh Morris (119) edged Shekoshi, Raftery bested Evans and Nave outdueled Scruggins for the Hornets’ match wins. Phillip Coleman, Pierce, Rodgriguez-Ramos and Bernd won by forfeit.
In the Manchester win, Ryder beat Toms and Tyler Dodson (140) pinned Agee in the first period. Nave outlasted Winslow and Walker topped Hadlow. White beat Tetterton and Phillip Coleman, Sigler, Morris and Pierce each won by forfeit.
Finally, in the final match, the Hornets notched eight wins–none by forfeit–to beat the host Indians.
Phillip Coleman pinned Elder and Michael Benner (135) pinned Vader. Almond dropped Parker and Pierce pinned Berier. Raftery outlasted Bennett and Nave dominated Green. White and Bernd each pinned their opponents as the Hornets rolled over Powhatan to win their final match of the day.
Orange visited Madison Wednesday and heads to Monticello Saturday and faces Charlottesville and Fluvanna next Wednesday as they prepare for the Jefferson District Tournament Feb. 6 in Orange.
