It was a tough night for the Orange County High School varsity boys soccer team.
Traveling to Monticello, the Hornets had trouble with the Mustangs’ muddy, mangled pitch.
Orange struck first with a first-half goal from Shane Bartholomew that gave the visitors an early lead, but it wouldn’t last. Monticello scored twice before the half to take a 2-1 lead.
The Hornets struck back and knotted the game at 2-2 on Matt Cronin’s goal, but couldn’t hold the momentum and allowed the winning goal on rebounding deflection.
The Mustangs tacked on another goal with a penalty kick that finalized the scoring.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 2-2-1.
The Hornets got their second win of the season Friday night, beating visiting Madison 3-1 in the rain.
Orange scored the first goal of the game at the 38th minute of the second half when Ethan Biggs slid in for a header off a cross from the back post from Cody Bennett.
Shane Bartholomew tallied the next Hornet scores on assists by Joe Morrison and Ryan Jenkins.
Madison’s lone score came on a penalty kick by Shepherd Waldenberger.
The win improved the Hornets’ record to 2-1-1.
The Hornets were scheduled to visit Fluvanna last Thursday, but rain postponed the match. The game is rescheduled April 9. The Hornets host Culpeper in Orange Friday night and then face William Monroe Monday in Orange.
JV boys soccer
The Hornets traveled to Monticello Monticello to play the Mustangs. The Orange JV adapted easily and adjusted well to the muddy, humped field, winning 3-1. Chris Johns, Josh Pugh, and Brennen Richardson each scored for the JV Hornets.
Friday night, the Hornet JV routed Madison 9-0, invoking the soccer slaughter rule. Sophomore Josh Pugh had a hat trick with two of his goals being scored by free kicks far outside the 18.
