Madison fired 17 second-half shots, with two finding the back of the net to take a 3-1 victory over the Orange County High School varsity girls soccer team Friday night.
Orange’s Rebecca Dulin staked the Hornets to an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the eighth minute of play. But the lead didn’t last long, when Samantha Cubbage lofted a shot in over Orange goalkeeper Erika Elford to knot the game at 1-1.
In the second half, the Mountaineer attack was too much. Madison kept peppering the goal with shots that kept Elford busy with 18 saves.
The girls earned their first win of the season a week ago with a 5-1 whipping of Culpeper in Orange.
The Hornets jumped out in front with two first-half goals and followed up with three more in the second half to trounce the Blue Devils and improve to 1-2.
Rebecca Dulin, Mandy Cronin, Malia Storey, Alicia Johns and Alexis Donahue each scored goals for the Hornets. Lauren Seal, Jessica Klein, Cronin, Donahue and Taylor Gillan all recorded assists.
The Hornets peppered the goal with ten shots and goal keeper Annike Nicolaisen made two saves.
The Hornets’ game last Thursday with Fluvanna was rained out, but the girls hosted Monticello Monday night in a Jefferson District match-up in Orange.
It was a long night for the Hornets, who fell behind 1-0 in the first half and gave up four second half goals to fall 5-0 to the visiting Mustangs.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 1-4.

In the match against Orange County, Madison tied the match at 1-1 in the 55th minute when Kathryn Crouthamel, who began the scoring play attempting a penalty kick, rebounded the blocked shot for the put back to tie the match.
Orange County’s Alexa Eclipse scored the match-winner when she connected with less than two minutes remaining to lift the team to a 2-1 win and even the season series against Madison County, which won the first meeting 4-0.
The JV girls also posted their first win of the season against Culpeper, beating the junior Blue Devils 2-0 last Tuesday.
