Hornets lose two in district

The Orange County High School girls tennis team won one singles match and one doubles match, but fell to Western Albemarle 7-2 Friday afternoon in Orange.
Maria Kotulka was the only Hornet to win her singles match, beating Nanda 10-8.
In doubles play, Rachel Donaldson and Ashley O’Sullivan teamed to beat Bland and Wright 10-7 for the Hornets’ lone doubles win.
Wilson and Nugent beat Squires and Haley 10-4, while Nanda and Randolph topped Kotulka and Jones 6-2.
The Hornets dropped to 5-4, 2-4 in the district with the loss.
Despite the final result, the Hornets played Monticello close in many matches Thursday before falling 9-0 to the homestanding Mustangs.
In singles play, top seeded Gaffney dispatched Squires 10-1 and Geldmacher beat Hanley 10-4.
But Rives struggled in beating Kotulka 11-9 and Shaw had a little trouble with Jones before winning 10-6. Williams needed a tiebreaker (7-4) to edge Klug 11-10 and Bourke pushed Combs to the limit before losing 11-9.
In doubles play, Gaffney and Geldmacher beat Squires and Hanley 8-4, while Rives and Shaw topped Kotulka and Jones by the same score.
Lin and Hathaway beat Donaldson and O’Sullivan 8-2 to complete the sweep.
Orange dropped to 5-3 and 2-3.
Orange won four singles matches and two more in doubles to beat Fluvanna 6-3 Wednesday.
Squires beat H. Scruggs 8-4. Hanley whipped B. Templeton 8-1.
C. Tomko edged Kotulka in 10-9 after winning a tiebreaker.
Jones beat M. Blanchetti 8-5, but H. Jenkins beat Klug 8-4. Bourke downed J. Powers 8-2.
In doubles play, Squires and Hanley beat Scruggs and Tomko 8-6, while Kotulka and Jones teamed to beat Blanchetti and Templeton 8-4. Fluvanna’s Jenkins and Powers beat Bourke and O’Sullivan 8-5.
The win improved the Hornets’ record to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Jefferson District.
