Hornet gymnasts advance

The Orange County High School gymnastics team carried a strong contingent to the State AA meet Feb. 14 at Harrisonburg High School and will send its top two gymnasts to the State AAA meet Saturday to West Potomac High School to compete with the state’s best.
Taylor Boyle had a solid all-around meet for the Hornets. She finished first in the floor exercise, sixth on the bars, second on the vault (missing first place by .075) and placed third in the all-around, earning a trip to Saturday’s AAA meet.
Teammate Alexa Dyott will be joining her at West Potomac High School. She was eighth in the floor exercise and earned her way to the State AAA meet as well.
Meanwhile, a handful of other Hornets competed at the State AA meet in Harrisonburg Saturday but did not advance.
Michelle Ross, Cynthia Dowell, Carrie Jacobs, Naomi Hynes, Lea Lawson, Alsace Dickerson and Jackie Thorsted also qualified for and competed Saturday.
In the Hornets’ regular meet of the season, Orange took first place against Harrisonburg and Turner Ashby Feb. 11.
Dowell won the all-around, with a third-place finish on the bars, a tie for third on the beam, a third on the floor and a fifth on the vault.
Boyle was first on the vault and the bars and fourth on the beam.
Lawson was first in the floor exercise and third all-around.
Dickerson finished second on the vault. Hynes was second on the bars and fourth on the floor.
Thorsted was second on the floor and Dyott tied Dowell for third on the beam.
Ross was fifth on the bars and Jacobs fifth on the floor.
