  • Tiger Woods takes out $54.5 million mortgage

JUPITER ISLAND, Fla. -- Fresh off his divorce, Tiger Woods has taken out a $54.5 million mortgage on his Florida waterfront estate. Mortgage documents filed last month in Martin County show Woods will make payments to an entity called JRD Florida Ventures LLC. That is a Virginia company whose registered agent is an attorney with the firm that represented Woods' ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, in their divorce.

  • WILL BATES

    Cavs get back to business

When we last saw the Virginia men’s soccer team, it was on a cold, rain-soaked winter day in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers had made all the clutch plays in a dramatic penalty-kick win over Akron and were celebrating the program’s first NCAA championship since 1994.

  • Solid line play key to Virginia's success in 2010

For months now, we’ve heard about Virginia’s intentions of returning to a physical running game. Certainly, if the Cavaliers are to win Saturday’s opener against visiting Richmond, then a bruising rushing attack will be the key.

  • UVa's '10-11 basketball schedule out

As it turns out, the rivals won’t have to wait long to renew acquaintances — they’ll be opening their ACC seasons against one another on Dec. 5 at Cassell Coliseum.

Tonight, UVa (3-0-1) hosts Richmond at 5:30 in the second game of a triple-header at Klockner Stadium.

  • Cavs open fall practice today

Regardless, a host of the names that filled box scores for the past three and four years have moved on and will not be at Virginia’s Davenport Field today as the new-look Cavaliers open fall practice.

  • Defense

  • Stingers 14U

    Stingers gear up for season

After completing a near perfect season and placing second in both the Virginia AAU State Championship game and the Super 33 Tournament (held in Maryland), the 14 and under Orange Stingers are eager for the start of the 2010 season.

  • JOHN-KEVIN DOLCE

    Claiming his spot

Most of fans would incorrectly peg the player in Virginia’s program with the most career sacks entering the 2010 season.

  • Shabaz, Courtney hang tough in loss

Courtney and Shabaz held their own throughout the contest, but a loose service game in each set was all it took for the veteran pair to move into the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

  • 2-time Tour de France champion Fignon dies of cancer

PARIS -- Two-time Tour de France champion Laurent Fignon has died after a battle with cancer. He was 50. His death was confirmed today by the French government and the French cycling federation. Fignon said in June 2009 that he had advanced cancer of the digestive system and was undergoing chemotherapy. Fignon won cycling's most prestigious event in 1983 and 1984. He lost to Greg LeMond in 1989 by eight seconds, the closest finish in the history of the Tour.

  • Shabaz, Courtney open against veteran team

Shabaz and Courtney, who were granted a wild card into the tournament by virtue of their NCAA championship in the spring, will play No. 10 seed Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman in first-round action today. The match will be the fourth of the day on Court 12.

  • Devvarman crashes out on opening day of U.S. Open

  • Lazor shoulders load, hopes for Cavs' offense

The easiest way to scare off a potential offensive coordinator candidate is to hire the rest of the offensive coaching staff before he has the opportunity to have any input.

  • Cavs have depth at quarterback

Strauss, Rocco and Gooch have been battling for snaps behind starter Marc Verica and redshirt freshman Ross Metheny ever since.

  • ALVIN PEARMAN
