The Orange County High School track teams participated in two meets last week and won't run again until April 18.
Rain Wednesday forced the teams to delay their scheduled meet by a day and travel to Fork Union for a quad meet with Monticello, Louisa and FUMA a day later.
In the boys meet, the Hornets finished fourth with 29 points. Louisa won the meet handily with 111 points, while Fork Union was second (73) and Monticello third (45).
Wayne Wright won the discus with a toss of 133' 3". James Harris placed third (120' 9 ½").
Tyrone Ellis tied for second in the 100 meters (11.10). Amir Waller tied for fifth (11.50).
Chris Lewis, Avery Powell, Jeff Taylor and Shain Kelley teamed for a second-place finish in the 4 x 800 relay (9:34.08).
Lewis placed third in the 400 meters (53.8) and teamed with Lamar Gordon, Powell and Eddie Ellington for a third-place finish in the 4 x 400 meters (3:39).
Gordon tied for third in the 110 hurdles (16.20) and finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.80). He also placed fifth in the triple jump (39' 4 ½").
Darius Carter was third in the shot put (43' ¼"), while Chad Galimore was fifth 42' 2 ¼".
The girls had some solid individual performances Thursday. Team scores were unavailable.
Charnee Long won the 100 meters in a time of 12.90. Teammates Nichole Givens (13.3) and Gequetta Davis (13.70) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Long also took the top spot in the 200 meters (26.5), followed by Skylar Scott in fourth (27.7).
Jessica Hensley, Zoe Klug, Grace Newman and Jessica Mandese finished second in the 4 x 800 (12:21.9), while Givens, Christina Hairston, Scott and Davis placed second in the 4 x 100 relay (52.60). Klug, Newman, Emani Combs and Alexis Richardson teamed for second in the 4 x 400 (4:40).
Combs was second in the 400 meters (1:03), with Newman fifth (1:08).
Erin Barden finished in third in the 3200 meters (15:23) ahead of teammate Hensley in fourth (16:15).
Davis placed second in the long jump with a leap of 15' 2".
Two days later, the Hornets made the short trip to Woodberry Forest for the Tigers' invitational.
The Hornet boys placed eighth of the 15 teams scoring in the meet, while the girls were seventh.
The girls top finisher was the 4 x 100 relay team of Givens, Hairston, Scott and Davis which placed second (51.71).
Givens placed fourth in the 100 (13.06). Combs was fifth in the 400 (1:02.89), while Davis was fifth in long jump (15' 6 ½").
The 4 x 400 relay team of Klug, Newman, Combs and Richardson also placed fifth (4:40.19).
Hensley, Klug, Newman and Barden teamed for a sixth-place finish in the 4 x 800 relay (12:02.58).
Hairston placed eight in the 100 and Scott finished eighth in the 200 to complete the Hornets' scoring.
The Orange girls tallied 32 points for a seventh-place finish. Louisa's girls won the meet with 189.5 points.
On the boys side, the Hornets had a number of fifth and sixth-place finishes in amassing 31.5 points for an eighth-place finish. Louisa's boys won the meet with 177 points.
Lewis, Jeff Taylor, Patrick Curtis and Cody Johnson teamed for a fourth-place finish in the 4 x 800 relay (8:56.68), while Gordon, Curtis, Hunter and Lewis ran 3:37.24 for a fifth-place spot in the 4 x 400 relay.
Harris was fifth in the discus (121' 9") followed by Wright (121' 4").
Carter was sixth in the shot put (44' 2 ¾").
Waller placed fifth in the 100 meters 911:38), while Lewis was sixth in the 400 (52.73). Gordon finished sixth in the 300 meters, eighth in the 110 hurdles and eighth in long jump.
Quintin Hunter added an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters to complete the Hornets' scoring.
Orange is off the rest of this week and next (spring break) and returns to action Saturday, April 18 at the Gus Lacy Track Classic at Fork Union.
