Track teams tune up for districts

The Orange County High School track teams traveled to Fluvanna Friday for the 15-team Fluvanna Invitational.
Ashontae Jackson led the way for the Hornet girls, winning the 400 meters (56.86) and the 200 meters (26.02), helping Orange to a seventh place finish. The Hornets totaled 32 points. Louisa's girls won with 106.
In addition to Jackson's stellar performance, Charnee Long was third in the high jump (4' 10") and part of the fifth-place 4 x 100 relay team (Long, Nicole Givens, Christina Hairston and Gequetta Davis).
The girls' 4 x 400 team (Grace Newman, Emani Combs, Kayla Jones and Hairston) finished fourth.
For the boys, the 4 x 400 relay of Lamar Gordon, Patrick Curtis, Chris Lewis and Quintin Hunter finished second (3:29.90).
Lewis, Curtis, Avery Powell and Jeff Taylor placed fifth in the 4 x 800 and Tyrone Ellis, Hunter, Amir Waller and Jordan Anderson tied for fifth in the 4 x 100.
Lewis placed fifth in the 400 meters, while Ellis was sixth in the 200. Wayne Wright earned a sixth-place finish in the discus.
Overall, the Hornet boys totaled 15.5 points and finished in 10th place behind winner Louisa (131).
Wednesday, the Hornets traveled to Western to compete against the Warriors, Charlottesville Black Knights and select athletes and runners from the Miller School and St. Annes.
Gordon and Lewis led the Hornet boys. Gordon won the 110 hurdles (20.1) and ran on the first-place 4 x 400 relay team (with Curtis, Lewis and Hunter). He also was third in long jump and the 400.
Lewis won the 400 (53.0) and was followed by Powell in second, Gordon third and Tevin Coker fifth.
Hunter, Ellis, Waller and Anderson finished second in the 4 x 100 (44.9).
James Harris placed second in the discus, while Dominique Walker was sixth.
Ellis placed third in the 100 meters, Curtis was third in the 300 hurdles. Jeff Taylor was fifth in the 1600 meters and Shain Kelley fifth in the 3200.
For the girls, Jackson led the way with a win in the 400 (58.9) and teaming with Jones, Newman and Combs to win the 4 x 400 (4:24.5). Combs also placed third in the 400.
Long was second in the 100 meters, followed by Givens in third, Hairston in fourth and Davis in fifth.
Long and Hairston tied for second in the 200 (27.6).
In the distance events, Jessica Hensley was fourth in the 1600, while Zoe Klug was third in the 800, followed by Newman in fourth.
The Hornets participate in Louisa's "Last Chance" meet Friday before the Jefferson District meet next Wednesday (also at Louisa).
