The Orange County High School girls tennis team's season ended last week in the Jefferson District tournament.
In team play, the Hornets suffered a 5-1 loss to Monticello in the Jefferson District semifinals.
The eventual tournament runners-up Mustangs had little trouble with the Hornet girls, winning five of six singles matches to secure the win.
In a match-up of top seeds, l. Gaffney beat Brittney Squires 6-0, 6-0. M. Rives beat Orange's Becca Hanley 6-3, 6-0 in a battle of two seeds.
Orange's Maria Kotulka earned the Hornets’ only win beating K. Geldmacher 6-4, 7-6, winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-5).
M. Shaw barely beat Chelsey Jones 6-4, 7-5 at number four. Among fifth seeds, Combs topped Emily Klug 6-2, 6-2, while sixth seed Hilary Bourke fell to L. Williams 6-3, 6-2.
Doubles play was suspended, but the Mustangs led in all three matches. The next night, they lost to Western 5-4 in the Jefferson District final.
The Hornets finished the season 10-5 overall and in third place in the district.
Outside of team competition the Hornets’ top doubles team of Squires and Hanley lost in the district doubles semifinals to Monticello's Lizzy Gaffney and Mayo Rives 6-4, 6-0.
