The Orange County High School boys swim team finished tied for ninth at the State AA Championship meet last weekend at the Williamsburg Aquatic Club.
The Hornet boys amassed 81 points, putting them even with Spotswood in ninth. Orange could take some satisfaction in the fact it edged Jefferson District rival Western Albemarle by a single point after the Warriors topped the Hornets earlier in the district meet.
Justin Barden was the Hornets' top finisher, placing second in the 100 backstroke. The sophomore swam the final in 53.54 falling short of State AA champion Ben Colley of Lafayette (51.96).
Barden placed seventh in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:01.79 and swam on two of the Hornets' relay teams.
Orange's 200 freestyle relay team of Ethan Wilkinson, Corey Kreiter, Alex Montes de Oca and Barden placed sixth in 1:33.19 and the Hornets' 200 medley relay squad of Barden, John Marquis, Montes de Oca and Cory Gunnett placed 14th (1:47.16), seven seconds behind the champion team from Hidden Valley (1:40.05).
Montes de Oca was the only other Hornet to place in the individual events, finishing fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.25) and 11th in the 200 IM (B final, 2:00.67).
Brentsville District was crowned state champions with 206 points.
