The Orange County High School varsity baseball team won two district games last week and dropped an out-of-district match-up amid foul weather Wednesday.
The Hornets withstood a late rally to beat Western Albemarle 6-5 Tuesday. In a rain-shortened, cold and sleeting contest Wednesday, the Hornets lost to Chancellor 8-4. But Friday night, the Hornets were back in the win column with a 3-1 win over visiting Charlottesville.
Zak Reininger pitched a complete game, limiting the Black Knights to six hits while striking out eight to get the win Friday.
Tyler Seal led off the game with a single and scored on Reininger's single. In the second inning, Mitchell King led off with a single and scored on Lonnie Dillard's single.
Charlottesville cut the lead to 2-1 with a fifth-inning run, but the Hornets added an insurance run in the sixth after Dillard singled and scored.
Reininger, Dillard and David Dulin each had two hits for the Hornets, who improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in district play.
Earlier in the week, the Hornets built a 6-0 lead over Western but watched the Warriors score five times in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the gap.
Orange struck for a run in the second and two more in the third. Two more runs in the fourth gave the Hornets a comfortable 5-0 lead. One last run in the top of the sixth put Orange up 6-0 with the home half of the inning remaining. Western made the most of it, rallying for five runs before Orange stopped the scoring and preserved the win.
Freshman Antonio Murphy shut down the Warriors for four innings in his varsity pitching debut. He gave up one hit and no runs, striking out four. Errors plagued the Hornets again as King pitched a clean fifth and sixth but gave up five runs-four unearned-in the seventh. Austin Oliver closed it out for the Hornets.
In a miserable game Wednesday, Orange fell behind early and couldn't catch up against Chancellor. Orange made seven errors in the field that gave the Chargers too many scoring chances.
The Hornets faced Madison Wednesday (after presstime), travel to Goochland Friday and host Louisa in Orange Tuesday night.
