Rahiem Cooper hit a walk-off home-run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Orange County High School varsity baseball team to an 8-7 win over Madison last week at Porterfield Park in Orange.
Cooper's homer made a winner out of Mitchell King, who pitched three innings of hitless, scoreless relief.
Orange opened with two runs in the bottom of the first before Madison came back to lead 3-2 after three. Orange scored four in the fourth to regain the lead 6-3. In the fifth, Madison tied the game at 6-6 after batting around, but the Hornets scored again to go up 7-6. Madison's run in the top of the sixth tied the game up again at 7-7. When the Hornets couldn't score in the sixth or the seventh, the game went into extra innings until Cooper's blast.
King struck out six in three innings to earn the win and had two hits. Cooper scored twice and reached base three times. David Dulin scored twice and Zak Reininger had two hits as Orange improved to 3-4 with the win.
Friday, against Goochland, the Hornets were dealt a tough-luck loss, falling to the Bulldogs 5-4, despite a solid pitching effort from Reininger.
Neither team scored in the opening two innings, but the Hornets struck for a run in the third after Dulin singled and came around to score. But the Bulldogs struck back for two runs in the home-half of the inning to lead 2-1.
Orange enjoyed another short-lived lead in the top of the fifth after Cooper walked, Dulin singled and Reininger homered, making it 4-2. Two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning tied the game at 4-4 before Goochland added the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Orange had two runners on base in the seventh but couldn't get them home and fell to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Jefferson District play.
Reininger took the loss despite pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs. Dulin had three hits and Reininger had two, including the home run.
