The Orange girls battled Goochland Thursday afternoon, but couldn't top the visiting Bulldogs in a 6-3 Jefferson District loss in Orange.
Every match was closely contested in both singles and double play.
Top seed Rachel Donaldson fell to M. Nunnelly 10-6 and Hornet second seed Rebecca Phipps lost to B. Alvis 10-7. C. Brown beat Orange third seed Megan Fowler 10-7 and K. Anderson topped Hornet fourth seed Maddie Scott 10-6. M. McLaughlin topped Orange's Rebecca Eichmann 10-6 before Brooke Chapman earned Orange's only singles win, 10-6 over R. Allison. In doubles, the Hornets took two of three. Nunnelly and Alvis beat Donaldson and Phipps 10-6, while Scott and Eichmann teamed to beat Brown and Anderson 10-7. Fowler and Chapman had the easiest match, a 7-2 win over McElroy and Miller.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in district play.
Orange visits Fluvanna Tuesday.
