The Orange County High School varsity baseball team earned a pair of big wins last week before dropping a district contest Friday.
Orange opened its week beating Jefferson District rival Louisa 5-3 Tuesday and followed up that win by defeating Battlefield District leading Courtland 10-5 Wednesday. Friday, the Hornets fell to William Monroe 6-2 in an otherwise productive week.
Against the Lions Tuesday, Orange got a solid pitching performance from Antonio Murphy who pitched into the fifth inning, limiting Louisa to two hits. Mitchell King threw the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save.
Rahiem Cooper went 3-3 with two runs scored, reaching base all four times he came to the plate. David Dulin had two hits.
Facing Courtland, the Hornets struck early to build a 6-1 lead and never looked back in a solid outing.
Austin Oliver threw five innings to pick up the win.
Cooper got things going in the first with a single. Dulin walked and Zak Reininger singled in Cooper. King singled in Dulin and Ryan Hutchison singled home King. In the second inning, Tyler Seal led off with a walk and Oliver reached on an error. Brent Pitts singled in Seal and Oliver and later scored on Lonnie Dillard's sacrifice. Orange added runs in the fourth, fifth and two in the sixth to finalize their scoring.
King had three hits for the Hornets and Reininger scored twice.
Friday night, the Hornets faced the Dragons and, despite two runs in the first inning, never crossed the plate again.
Reininger went the distance, struck out nine, but took the loss. Cooper had two of the Hornets' four hits.
Orange faces Courtland Thursday and visits Charlottesville Tuesday before hosting Monticello Friday.
