The Orange County High School varsity boys soccer team traveled to Western Albemarle last Thursday to play in the Jefferson District's third-place consolation game against Charlottesville, with the winner advancing to the Region II tournament.
It was make-or-break time for both teams. But in the end, the Black Knights were too strong and won a 5-3 battle that brought the Hornets' season to an end. The Hornets came out firing in the first half with the momentum immediately on Orange's side. With this energy, sophomore Danny Goodsell transferred the momentum into a goal when in the 39th minute he won the Charlottesville goal kick and hit a shot in the side netting for a Hornet score.
However, as the half wore on, Charlottesville began to creep back in the game, and senior Rakitha Chelliah scored three straight goals for the Black Knights.
The Orange side was stunned, but woke up late in the half and began to stop the bleeding. Senior Eric Wilkening sent a ball across to Goodsell who put another goal away for the Hornets. The half came to a close with Charlottesville leading 4-2.
The second half began with the two sides holding each other at bay; neither team transferring their attacks into scores. The two teams realized this could be the end of their seasons and began to increase the intensity as the half wore on. After several close chances by the Hornets, the team finally capitalized and Wilkening sent a ball to senior Josh Pugh who placed it by the keeper, bringing the score to 4-3.
"Our team showed great heart fighting back, they gave it their all, and in the end that's all you can ask for," said Orange Coach Dwane Pugh.
After an unfortunate own-goal, the Hornets ran out of time to come back. The game and the Hornets' season ended with the final score of 5-3.
"I've coached some of these guys since they were 5 years old. I'm gonna miss them," coach Pugh said. Orange finished the year with a record of 11-7-1.
