The Orange County High School varsity boys baseball team again fell victim to their defensive struggles in a 4-2 loss Friday to Monticello.
Visiting the Mustangs, the Hornets dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in district competition after their first Jefferson District game of the young season.
The Hornets opened with a run in the top of the first but gave up two in the second to trail early. But Orange came back to tie the game at 2-2 with a run in the third before giving up runs in the fourth and fifth and failing to score the rest of the game.
Orange rapped out seven hits, but made seven errors that led to all four unearned runs.
Zak Reininger pitched four innings of six-strikeout ball, yielding only two hits, but took the loss after giving up three unearned runs. Mitchell King relieved him and tossed two innings of one-hit ball, giving up one unearned run.
Tyler Seal had three hits for the Hornets and two stolen bases, scoring once. Jake Koontz had a hit and a run batted in, while Lonnie Dillard, Reininger and Antonio Murphy collected the Hornets' other hits.
Following another disappointing loss, Orange head coach Brian Rasnick said Reininger pitched well against the Mustangs who only had one solid hit all evening. In addition to the errors, Rasnick pointed to 11 Hornets left on base as another culprit in the loss.
Orange hosted Western Albemarle Tuesday night and welcomes Charlottesville to Orange Friday. The Hornets host Madison in Orange next Wednesday.
