Coming off two tough losses, the Orange County High School varsity boys soccer team faced Monticello Thursday night at the Hornets' home field at Prospect Heights.
With both teams needing a win, the game was filled with a lot of intensity and excitement. In the end the Hornets were victorious, winning 2-0.
The Hornets got things started in the first half and scored all the goals they would need.
Scrappy sophomore Danny Goodsell stole the ball and put it away for Orange's first goal and the second was scored by senior Josh Pugh who luckily got hit in the chest by the keeper trying to clear it out, and the ball sailed over the goalie and into the net.
In the second half, the Mustangs had several chances but Orange's defense held tough and the Hornets preserved the lead to claim the victory.
Saturday, the Hornets hosted the Charlottesville Black Knights who were coming off a big win against Fluvanna, the top-seeded team in the Jefferson District.
However, the Hornets sent a powerful message to the rest of the district with an outstanding 5-1 victory over the Black Knights.
In the first half both teams were pressing hard, until Pugh found the net on an assist from senior Austin Horner. Then Goodsell, assisted by senior Ryan Jenkins, brought the score to 2-0-a lead the Hornets would hold until the break. The Hornets kept pouring it on in the second with Pugh scoring again assisted by Jenkins. Also, senior Campbell Hancock blasted one inside the box for another goal. But the goal of the day came when junior Logan Bartholomew blasted a half-field free kick over the goalie for the last Orange score.
Winning their previous two games, the Hornets were beginning to hit their stride, and continued to show it with a 6-0 win against the Goochland Bulldogs Monday.
Early in the game, the Hornets flexed their muscles with four first-half goals. Pugh got the first, assisted by Campbell Hancock. Goodsell notched the second, assisted by senior Justin Fowler. The third came when senior Troy Johnson scored on a Jenkins pass. The last goal came from Bartholomew, assisted by junior Brennen Richardson. The half came to a close with Orange comfortably in the driver's seat.
The Hornets added two more scores in the second half to finalize the scoring. Jenkins scored the Hornets' fifth goal on an assist from Fowler and the last nail in the Bulldogs' coffin came off a corner kick from Horner that junior Chico Diaz-Perez put away.
The Hornets (8-2-1, 6-2-1) travel to Louisa Thursday and host William Monroe Monday night in Orange.
