Sometimes, like last Tuesday's 4-0 win over Goochland, the Orange County High School varsity baseball team just looks great. They pitch well, they field well and they score enough runs to win. Then there are games like Friday's 14-3 loss to Louisa where none of those things happen.
Hosting the county's youth league baseball players Friday night in the Jefferson District rivalry match-up, the Hornets made nine errors and were blown out in a slaughter rule-shortened loss to the visiting Lions.
Orange gave up eight runs on three errors in the second to fall behind 8-0.
The Hornets rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third behind a two-RBI triple from Zak Reininger, but Orange wouldn't score again. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to complete the scoring.
After Tuesday's stellar performance, the Hornets had high hopes coming into Friday's showdown.
Hosting a visiting Goochland squad, Orange got seven strong innings from Austin Oliver who held the Bulldogs to just four hits, while striking out four.
Orange opened the scoring with a run in the third after Rahiem Cooper hit a solo home run. Clinging to that 1-0 lead in the sixth, the Hornets added three more runs to give Oliver a cushion for the top of the seventh.
Cooper doubled and scored on Reininger's inside-the-park home run to make it 3-0 Orange. Mitchell King then doubled and scored on Oliver's single to finalize the scoring.
The Hornets visit Fluvanna Friday and Western Albemarle Tuesday before starting Jefferson District Tournament play later next week.
