The Orange County High School varsity boys baseball team's season ended Friday with a 13-3 Jefferson District Tournament quarterfinal loss to Monticello.
The loss concluded a disappointing and at times frustrating season for the Hornets, who finished 7-13.
Orange got off to a good start Friday, though, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Lonnie Dillard led off with a single and Rahiem Cooper reached after he was hit by a pitch. David Dulin drove them both in with the first of his two doubles and just like that, the Hornets were up 2-0.
Monticello scratched for a run in the home half of the first to cut the lead. Unfortunately, for the Hornets and their fans, the first inning included most of the Orange offensive output. Monticello's J. Malm shut down the Hornet bats as the Mustangs took the lead 3-2 in the third and tacked on seven more runs in the fourth.
Dulin doubled leading off the sixth and scored on Mitchell King's single, but it was too little, too late. Monticello plated three more runs and the slaughter rule was enacted, ending the game and the Hornets' season.
