Orange County High School freshman Jillisa Burke earned a trip to the Northwest Region indoor track championships Wednesday with a sixth-place finish in the Commonwealth District meet last week.
Burke jumped 4’ 4” in the girls high jump as one of only two Hornets placing at last week’s AAA district meet.
The girls 4 x 200 relay team of Isis Fuller, Chanelle Johnson, Champayne Johnson and Harmony Johnson finished seventh in a time of 2:15.03. While the Hornet girls placed and earned points for their finish, only the top three relay teams advance to the next level.
Overall, it was a somewhat disappointing finish to the season for the Hornets as a number of athletes didn’t participate in the district meet, according to coach Renee Almond.
The ones who ran and participated worked hard and tried their best,” she said.
Chanelle Johnson, Fuller and Champayne Johnson all participated in the girls 55, but did not place among the top eight. Helen Gilliam and Amanda Berube ran in the girls 1600 and Burke competed in the girls 300 with Katelyn Gibson.
Dean Lyon and Trevonne Jackson ran in the boys 55 but did not place. Patrick O’Connor ran in the boys 1600 and Eric Sidelko in the boys 3200.
The Orange girls finished seventh with 5 points. Colonial Forge (162) won the district title for the girls. The Orange boys finished with 0 points. Colonial Forge (190.83) also took the boys title.
