Hornets wrestling dominates regular season finale

Orange County wrestler Mike Benner (145) went 4-0 over the weekend as the Hornets traveled to Warren County to face Eastern View, Millbrook, George Mason and Dominion.

The Orange County High School wrestlers finished their regular season last week with a quad-meet against their former Jefferson District foes in Louisa Wednesday and at an the Wildcat Scramble Saturday in Warren County.

Wednesday, the Hornets had little trouble with William Monroe (51-25), Louisa (61-12) or even Fluvanna (45-30).

Against the Flucos, Isaiah Coleman-Combs (106), Jonathan Turner (113), Kirk Sweeney (132), Bruce Schlegel (138), Ryan Almond (152), Sean Raftery (160), Zach Ryder (170) and Trevor Payne (182) all notched wins for Orange.

The Hornets only dropped two matches to the host Lions, with Coleman-Combs, Turner, Will Roberts (120), Tyler Newton (126), Sweeney, Almond, Raftery, Ryder, Payne, Tyler Dodson (195) and Aaron Keness (220) all picking up wins for Orange.

Facing the Greene Dragons, Turner, Newton, Sweeney, Schlegel, Matthew Goodsell (145), Almond, Raftery, Ryder and Payne all won for the Hornets, who swept the quad meet.

The Hornets did nearly as well Saturday, dropping only a match to Millbrook (49-16), while posting victories over Eastern View (42-31), George Mason (67-6) and Dominion (64-12).

Millbrook, one of the top AA teams a year ago, handed Orange only its third loss this season.

Coleman-Combs, Sweeney, Mike Benner (145) and Ryder all posted wins for the Hornets.

In the Eastern View match, Roberts, Hugh Morris (126) Sweeney, Benner, Almond, Raftery, Ryder and Dodson all won.

The Hornets only dropped one match in the George Mason rout, with Coleman-Combs, Turner, Morris, Sweeney, Schlegel, Benner, Almond, Raftery, Ryder, Payne, Dodson and Antonio Murphy (285) all winning for Orange.

Orange nearly had a clean sweep against Dominion as well, dropping only two matches. Turner, Roberts, Morris, Sweeney, Schlegel, Benner, Raftery, Ryder, Payne Dodson and Murphy all recorded wins for the Hornets.

Orange hosts the Commonwealth District tournament Saturday at the Hornet Sports Center, beginning at 10 a.m. Regionals are scheduled Feb. 10-11 at Forest Park High School with the state meet Feb. 17-18 at Robinson Secondary School.
