Slow start dooms girls

The Orange County High School varsity girls basketball team fell way behind early and struggled to catch up in a 62-35 loss Friday to Mountain View.

With a week off since their last game, a 57-36 loss to Riverbend, the Hornets were hoping to notch their first AAA win Friday in front of their home crowd. Unfortunately, for Orange and their fans, it wasn’t their night.

The Wildcats stormed to a 20-3 first quarter lead that effectively ended the game in the first eight minutes.

Orange rallied in the second quarter and outscored the visitors 15-14, but still trailed at the break 34-18.

A low-scoring third quarter doomed the Hornets who managed just six points to the Wildcats’ 12.

Rebecca Harvey scored eight points to lead the Hornets and Jada Davis, Shante Demar and Ashleigh Williams each added six.

Orange (0-19, 0-13), faced Massaponax Tuesday night, visits Colonial Forge Friday and wraps up the regular season Monday at home with Stafford.
