Nancy Thomas played hockey with her brothers as a child and then volleyball in college. It's fitting she's considered by some to be the retail coach of the Richmond area. Thomas, 51, is president and CEO of the Retail Merchants Association. She's an ally for area retailers as they fight to survive -- and thrive -- during one of the worst economic declines in decades. Thomas, who took the helm on an interim basis a year ago this month and permanently in January, has worked to get retailers the training and information to help them manage during the recession. She also started a mentoring group and a shop local marketing campaign. "To me, she's more of a coach than a president and CEO," said Kenneth Wayland, president of Free Agents Marketing in Henrico County and a board member of the association. "You can see it at board meetings where everybody is pumped up and all the seats are taken. You can see it when she mentors members." Thomas starts work at 7 a.m. and leaves with the cleaning crew. "If you need to come in early and stay late, you just do it," Thomas said. "It's your job."
